Nigerian Newspapers: 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. Former governor of Abia State, Orji-Uzor Kalu, Wednesday, formally joined the All Progressives congress, APC. The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun and the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, received Kalu at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. Kalu said he decided to join the party following pressure from friends and well wishers.



 2. The Court of Appeal in Abuja, yesterday, reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the substituted PDP governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, in the forthcoming November 26 Ondo election, over his replacement with Jimoh Ibrahim. Justice Ibrahim Saulawa-led three-man panel said the date to deliver the judgment would be communicated to the parties through their lawyers.

3. The Senate said on Wednesday that it had concluded arrangements to summon the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, FCSC, Mrs. Joan Ayo, over allegations of secret employment being carried out by government Ministries, Department and agencies in the country.


 4. The Nigerian Under-20 team, Falconets, defeated their Canadian counterparts 3-1 in their Wednesday group stage match, boosting their chances of qualifying for the next round of the FiFA Under-20 Women World Cup in Papua New Guinea. Chinaza Uchendu, Joy Bokiri and Chiwendu Ihezuo scored one each to help Nigeria come from behind to register their first 3 points.


 5. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has disclosed that batch B stream II corps members would be mobilized to camp in January, 2017. New Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Sule Kazaure, made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, during a media parley with some journalists.

6. Comrade Timi Frank has condemned Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, for betraying the one that made him who he is today, saying that El-Rufai’s suggestion that former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar is corrupt was an act of ingratitude. He said Atiku propelled El-Rufai into limelight, with an appointment in the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE). He also accused the Governor of always betraying his benefactors. 7. Amnesty International, yesterday, called on Singapore to immediately put on hold the Friday’s planned execution of Chijoke Stephen Obioha, a Nigerian national on death row for possession of hard drugs in the country. Obioha’s appeal for clemency has been rejected and is to be executed tomorrow.



 8. A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, said he was protected by Boko Haram suspects during his four-day detention at Kuje Prison. He disclosed this in an article titled, ‘Head bloodied but not bowed and the ascension of President-Elect Donald Trump’ on Wednesday. He also disclosed his 3-hours’ meeting with Nnamdi Kanu in prison, saying Kanu is the most dogged fighter in Igboland as at now.



  9. Former chairman of Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, has passed on. He died on Wednesday afternoon at the age of 72. Chief Gbadamosi has been reportedly battling ill-health for some years and had received medical attention both in Nigeria and abroad. 10. Despite the intervention by the Senate to stop the ongoing warning strike by ASUU, the strike will continue as planned. Senate President Bukola Saraki presided over a three-hour closed-door meeting with the officials of the union, but could not convince them to suspend the warning strike. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Senator Jibrin Barau, who addressed journalists, said the Senate could not stop the warning strike. He, however, said its intervention would prevent the strike from transforming to an indefinite action.
