The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Brutai, has disagreed with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FC), Mohammed Bello on the ownership of Maitama Extension Estate. It was recalled that the Army had on September 13, 2016, without any provocation deployed soldiers to the district and drove out workers of Kakaata Construction Company, who were engaged to
provide engineering infrastructure for the district and sealed off the road leading to the estate.
Mediating between the FCT authorities led by the minister and the representatives of the Chief of Army Staff led by Maj-Gen. Pat Ake on the rightful owners of the land, the Chairman Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye said the committee was completely dismayed when it received petitions from members of the public and read from pages of the Dailies about the sudden seizure of 238 heaters of land spanning over 400 plots in Maitama Extension District in Abuja by the Nigeria Army.
According to him the action of the Army was without notification to the allottees of the plots or the FCT Minister who is saddled with the administrative responsibility for the territory.
He cited section 297 (2) of 1999 Constitution as amended further affirmed that the ownership of that land in the FCT vest in the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, adding that the Act establishing the FCT vest all land in the President who delegates this powers to the Minister of FCT.
Melaye said: “Access to the land was denied, all equipment and trucks have been entrapped in the district. The committee reliably informed that soldiers sighted at the entrance of the district barred people from entering the district at the order of the Chief of Army Staff who instructed them to take over the district and not allow anybody in or out of the premises.
“The Maitama Extension District actually designed and allocated in 2008/2009 by the then FCT Minister, Senator Adamu Alero under the administration of late President Musa Yar’adua along side Katamkpe.

Dino explained that to clear the confusion caused by the seizure of the Maitama extension by the Army, the Senate has invited the Authorities of FCT and the Chief of Army Staff to make their submission on the matter.
