No fewer than one hour ago, report reaching us confirmed that 11 people were killed, 5 persons are missing and over 200,000 other persons affected by the unusual flooding in Sri Lanka.
To attest to this fact, we digged deep to see if we can lay our hands on another concrete information behind this unusual flooding, but to our surprise we were told by another source that rain has stopped in many areas of the state.
From the least we could gather, we were only told by the disaster management center that 11 dead & 5 missing due to bad weather, over 200,000 people affected, 1,300 houses damaged. In another statement issued by the disaster management center, about 30,000 people have been evacuated to safe locations as heavy rains continue. Most deaths were attributed to landslides and electrocution.
Navy spokesman Akram Alavi says that 24 teams have been deployed across the country to rescue people marooned in the floods and evacuate those living in threatened areas.
